Be Good to the Globe Year Round with these Eco-Friendly Offerings
When you look at one of those big, romping mansions in Sagaponack, you might not necessarily think green. But this 1880s farmhouse (which, incidentally, was once home to James Jones of "From Here to Eternity" fame) is eco-friendly and then some. It's listed for $8.95 million, and the owner/designer of the 6,100-square-foot, five-bedroom, 9½-bathroom house, Peter Sabbeth, worked with Modern Green Home (an eco-design firm) to renovate the place using Forest Stewardship Council-certified lumber, formaldehyde-free insulation and recycled and energy-efficient products. But to have a truly eco-friendly house, the place needs to be heated and cooled efficiently, so Sabbeth installed a state-of-the-art geothermal heating system that uses radiant under-floor heating, collects rainwater in drains and employs 10-kilowatt photovoltaic solar panels to greatly reduce the house's carbon footprint.
